Griffith's Gnat

Griffith's Gnat
Hook: Dry fly hook #22 or #24
Rib: X-small copper wire, wound 90 degrees slanted against the direction that the herl is wound
Body: Small diameter peacock herl
Hackle: Grizzly, one size smaller than the hook size

I never did much with the Griffith's Gnat until I started tying them in very small sizes. The results since have been surprising, and I've taken some very big fish with this very small fly. I like to drop it off a #20 Olive Parachute in the Fall, using the parachute as an indicator. I don't what hatch this matches, but the brown trout take it when they're bulging for midges. I've heard that they take it in larger sizes as a midge cluster, but you can't prove that by me.
